This sketch depicts Austrian-born Jewish violinist Sigmund Nissel (1922-2008), a founder member of the Amadeus Quartet (and reputedly its 'organisational brains'), which became one of the most distinguished string quartets in postwar Britain. With an international reputation, its four members, remarkably, remained constant during its forty year history, from 1947-87. Three of the four, who were all Austrian, initially met as internees in 1940: Brainin (1923-2005) and Schidlof (1922-1987) in Press Heath transit camp; Nissel and Schidlof, subsequently, on the Isle of Man.
