Jacob Epstein 1880-1959
Chaim Azriel Weizmann was born in Motal, Belarus, then within the Russian Empire, in 1874. He immigrated to Britain in 1904 to take up a post as senior lecturer in the deparment of Chemistry at the University of Manchester. He became a British citizen in 1910 and remained in England until he became the first President of Israel in 1949, remaining in the post until his death in 1952.
Epstein's bust of Weizmann, carried out in 1933, is one of a series of portraits he made of celebrated sitters.
