Abraham Mintchine 1898-1931
All Mintchine's work prior to his arrival in Paris in 1926, has since disappeared and his surviving work, including this loosely handled gouache landscape, therefore date from his last six years (1926–31). It was most probably painted around Provence, where the artist regularly worked during the late 1920s, alongside the French artist Othon Friesz. A Landscape by Mintchine, possibly the same one, was shown in the 1954 Annual Exhibition at Ben Uri Art Gallery (catalogue number 116), however, this work was presented to the collection by Gimpel Fils gallery in 1956 and subsequently featured in The Fortieth Anniversary Exhibition of the Ben Uri Art Society.
