Born in 1975, Sarah Lightman is a graphic artist, curator and writer, who lives and works in London. She completed her Art Foundation Course at Central St Martins and her BA and MFA at the Slade School of Fine Art, where she won a number of awards including the Slade Prize. As Artist Liaison Officer at Ben Uri (2007-8), she curated the exhibitions 'Bomberg's Relevance' at Ben Uri Gallery in 2007 and 'Schmatte Couture' at the Rivington Gallery in London's East End in 2008.
Sarah’s PhD from the University of Glasgow, entitled ‘Dressing Eve and Other Reparative Acts’, was awarded The Principal’s Early Career Mobility Award to study at Columbia University in 2017. She was also awarded The 2015 Will Eisner Award for Best Scholarly/Academic Work, The 2015 Susan Koppelman Award for Best Feminist Anthology and an Honorable Mention by the 2016 Jordan Schnitzer Book Awards (Jews and The Arts) for her edited collection ‘Graphic Details: Jewish Women’s Confessional Comics in Essays and Interviews’ (McFarland 2014). She has published in numerous books and journals, and co-edited two Special Issues of Studies in Comics, 6.2, (2015) and 7:2 (2017). Her first graphic novel, ‘The Book of Sarah’ (Myriad Editions) will be published in 2019, and she is co-director of Laydeez do Comics.
