This pen and ink drawing is one of the three preparatory studies for costume designs for an unidentified production by a Berlin-born book illustrator and textile artist Renate Meyer. Although the costume itself is not worked through in great detail, the boy's facial features and figure are depicted with great skill, resulting in a lively and expressive portrait. The boy is not looking directly at the viewer and is clasping his hands in front of him, seemingly preoccupied with his own thoughts.
