Between 1933 and 1939, Jeffay made three prolonged visits to Poland, studying and sketching the Jewish community in the Warsaw Ghetto. This is no. 3 in the album of fourteen etchings, known as Visages du Ghetto, published in 1959 with a preface by Jean Cassou, curator of the Musee National d'Art Moderne, Paris, and with a preface by Sir Herbert Read. Ten original drawings from the series, including this one, along with copies of the album, alongside eleven paintings and a selection of drawings and etchings (some of which were for sale) were exhibited in an exhibition entitled 'Visages du Ghetto: Paintings, Drawings and Etchings of Jewish Europe before the War by Paul Jeffay (1898-1957)' held at Ben Uri Gallery in 1994.
