In February 1954, Lilian Holt left England with her husband, painter David Bomberg, still largely ignored by the British art establishment; they returned to Ronda in Spain, where they planned to establish a painting school in the Villa Paz in the old town. Although the scheme foundered, both produced work responding strongly to the dramatic Andalusian landscape, including this expressive landscape of Ronda, in both charcoal and in vigorously handled paintings, drawing direct inspiration from the rugged, mountainous terrain.
