This delicate drypoint depiction of a shtetl, a traditional Eastern-European Jewish settlement, reminiscent in its free-flowing and soft lines of a pencil drawing, references Lichtenstein’s childhood spent in Poland. Depictions of the traditional way of life in a shtetl were popular among Lichtenstein’s Jewish peers from the Ecole de Paris, a group of artists who settled and worked in Paris in the early 20th century, including, among others, Marc Chagall, Emmanuel Mane-Katz and Marek Szwarc.
