Erich Kahn was a prolific draughtsman who worked in ink, charcoal, pencil and watercolour, though he mostly favoured sanguine for the subtle way he could move between tone and line. From the late 1940s onwards, he drew from the nude incessantly. During the early 1950s, he was an active participant at the life drawing sessions held at the Hampstead studio of the former fellow Hutchinson camp internee, sculptor Paul Hamann. ‘Nude II’ is a prime example of Kahn’s work from that period, executed by the artist from life in three or four minute poses and reworked in the studio later, and characterised by the use of swirling, overlapping and multiple lines to express form. This drawing was presented to Ben Uri by the model, Jane Stuckey, in 2002.
