The present work is a poster for the exhibition of woodcuts by Jacob Pins held at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem in 1985. As the curator Elisheva Cohen wrote in 1972, 'Much aware of his environment, he chooses his subjects from life surrounding him... He loves animals and enjoys giving form to their expressive agility.' The image depicts three storks, identified by their distinct red bills and long legs. The influence of the Japanese woodcut tradition is visible here, a consequence of the artist's collecting focus from the 1940s onwards. He masterfully captures the birds' elegance and grace while simultaneously making the most of the technical capabilities of the woodcut medium. The image is notable for its vivid contrasts of red, grey, white and black, yet, equally, Pins 'extricates delicate transitions and soft nuances from the rough wood', as is particularly visible in the subtle colour gradations of its background.
