In 2004 actor Sir Antony Sher starred in 'Primo', his multi-award-winning one-man show adaptation of Italian chemist, partisan, writer, and Jewish Holocaust survivor Primo Levi's novel entitled 'If This Is A Man'. This was later followed by Sher's retrospective 2008 self-portrait, depicting himself in this role. 'Self-portrait as Primo' shows a soberly attired, bespectacled and bearded figure in the lower right of the canvas, set against an oppressively dark background, reminiscent of the simple stage adopted for his performance reflecting Levi's harrowing captivity in Auschwitz.
