The main subject of this triptych is the obstacles encountered by the refugees at the border. These often take the form of hastily erected blockades, guarded by sentries and built by countries through which the refugees must pass to continue their journey to safety.
The right and left panel of this triptych are densely constructed with collage into which are woven the paraphernalia of war. The central panel opens out to reveal a path, a way through. On the path is depicted a sepulchral figure with arms outstretched representing Faith. This recent exodus of refugees comprises people of many nations who have drawn on their diverse religions to give them the strength to carry on. Writing in the sky emphasises the subject matter and in the central panel the lament “Why have you forsaken me?” adds poignancy to the work.
