Tirzah (née Eileen) Garwood studied at Eastbourne School of Art, taught by Eric Ravilious, whom she married, afterwards living among the Great Bardfield Artists’ community in Essex. Garwood first exhibited (while still a student) at the Redfern Gallery in 1927 and was commissioned by the BBC to illustrate Granville Bantock’s The Pilgrim’s Progress. Her witty and original woodcuts ceased after her marriage, motherhood, and the outbreak of the Second World War (Ravilious was killed in 1942). From 1943 she painted and created collages. Her work was included posthumously in the 1963 WIAC historical exhibition. This engraving was one of a pair commissioned by Oliver Simon in 1929 for an uncompleted calendar for the Curwen Press.
