Frank Rosen
The natural inclination of his romantic and literary personality continued to express itself through Rosen’s art. Elements of fantasy and decorative images were embedded within his paintings. Rosen describes the high point of this phase of his work as Gothic, whether influenced by illuminated manuscripts cathedral architecture, stained glass windows or costume. Intricate components of fact and fancy, minutely drawn against dramatic backgrounds become discernible with the viewer’s increasingly careful observation. ‘Westminster Abbey’ is a transcendent hymn to the countless patient hours he spent there faithfully recording what he saw, and then mischievously with artistic license, introducing a few gargoyles of his own.
