Harry Weinberger 1924-2009
Immigrated to England 1939
The date of Weinberger's visit to Brooklyn Heights, a residential neighbourhood in New York, is unknown, but he travelled frequently, making numerous drawings that often inspired later compositions employing recurring motifs such as the sea, seascapes, harbours and ships. Brooklyn Heights uses familiar elements of his style: bold, non-naturalistic colour applied in broad, flat strokes to create a shimmering whole as the East River snakes through a townscape bounded by high buildings jostling against the skyline on its right and lower dwellings, perhaps the remnants of old brownstones to its left.
