In February 1954, Lilian Holt left England with her husband, painter David Bomberg, for Ronda in Spain, where they planned to establish a painting school in the Villa Paz in the old town. Although the scheme foundered, both produced work responding strongly to the dramatic Andalusian landscape. In this painting, Holt uses broad sweeps of vivid colour to evoke the heat and rugged contours of the landscape.
