German émigré artist Walter Nessler's hallucinatory vision of boarded-up London with its buildings fenced in by framed canvases and the street narrowing sharply to a vanishing perspective, symbolises the curtailed opportunities of the artist in exile and at war. He later described the war years and the immediate postwar period as ‘the darkest and most difficult time for continuous artistic work and development.’
