Following the introduction of internment for so-called ‘enemy aliens’ in June 1940, many were sent to internment camps on the Ise of Man. The artist of this commemorative piece has yet to be identified. Headed 'Zur Erinnerung von deinen Freunden' (In Memory of Your Friends), it show a youth triumphantly tearing apart the camp wire, beneath which appear the words 'Jungend Siegende Jungend' (Youth Victorious Youth). It is accompanied by 29 internees' signatures: The first signatory (top left) is that of Kurt Weiler (1921–2016), a German Kindertransportee, who later became a renowned puppet film animator and film director in the German Democratic Republic after the war). Artist Ernst Eisenmayer’s signature appears fourth in the second column. He was first held in Central camp from October 1940, before moving to Onchan camp, and finally Mooragh camp (Ramsey), where he remained until his release in September 1941.
Both men were moved to Onchan camp in February 1941. After internment, Eisenmayer and Weiler continued to be friends and fellow members of The Austrian Centre, and its youth movement Young Austria is possibly referenced in the text.
