The free brushwork and breezy palette enliven Sanders' evocation of his local Hampstead Heath. In a review of Sanders' 1954 exhibition at Ben Uri Gallery, the critic Michael Bullock (Jewish Quarterly, Vol. 2, no. 2, Autumn 1954) described his landscapes as 'distinguished by a remarkable evocation of atmosphere in both senses of the word [...], they convey the feeling of a scene - nostalgia, gaiety or desolation - but they also reveal as an essential ingredient in this emotional climate, the physical climate of sun-drenched warmth or icy damp. The artist has a wonderful capacity for disclosing the structure and growth, the aliveness of a tree [...] The refreshing directness of Sanders' work is something to be grateful for'.
