Lubitch started his career as a designer of theatre and stage décor, a profession that took him to Berlin, and then to Paris, where he took up a contract for the decoration of a Montmartre cabaret in 1923. His works reveal a sustained interest in theatre, costume and the circus, as demonstrated in these two etchings. The standing clown may belong to the 1934 album entitled Cirque, comprising ten etchings and aquatints with a poem preface by George Rouault.
