Philip Sutton’s painting of Parliament Square takes an unfamiliar view of a familiar location, as the Houses of Parliament are glimpsed through an energetic application of freshly coloured paint, energetically applied in a series of dabs, dots and swirls, as though decked out with colourful bunting or flags, in a style that has an affinity with both the Fauves and the German Expressionists. Born to Jewish parents and raised in East London, he later studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, where he won scholarships that enabled his travels to mainland Europe, as well as later further afield to Australia and Fiji, where he further developed his love of bold colour.
