Jacob Bornfriend’s print portfolio, a limited edition series of lithographs depicting Jewish Festivals was published in 1957 as a follow-up to his studies on biblical themes for a commissioned mural for the library of the Jews' College building in London, designed by the architect Eugene Rosenberg. In this series, Bornfriend synthesised drawing, painting and collage, combining a number of processes, including block printing, screen printing and lithography. These striking graphic images use bold splashes of colour against a dramatic black background, bringing together both figurative and still-elements in a style partly reminiscent of Chagall.
