Unusually for the artist, there are no precise street names in John Allin’s vibrant East End Market Scene, but the lively stalls and shops – many with Jewish names, such as Mrs. Levitt’s famous shoe shop – selling everything including food, clothing, footwear, crockery and wallpaper suggest that this is the famous Petticoat Lane Market area, based at Wentworth Street and Middlesex Street in Spitalfields, and still extant today.
