Josef Herman 1911-2000
Three generations of an exhausted refugee family huddle together; the poverty of their dire circumstances counterpointed by their closeness and the splashes of rich colour against the brown wash. This is the second work titled Refugees by Josef Herman in the Ben Uri Collection and a companion piece to the larger work. It was first shown in the exhibition Josef Herman: Warsaw, Brussels, Glasgow, London, 1938–45 in 2011.
