Marcia Annenberg b. 1950
Painted in 1996, the artist describes this work as 'a response to the genocide at Srebrenica during the Bosnian conflict. Although it refers to genocide universally, [...] the painting was based on a photograph taken in Bosnia of a typical street scene, with men carrying cans of gasoline, as reported in the 'New York Times'. You had to wonder if those same men were among the 7,000 men and boys, massacred in the following days.'
'The Disappeared' was exhibited at the gallery, The Puffin Room, located in Soho, New York City, in 2002, as part of an exhibition entitled 'War'.Provenance
