This print, based on a pen-and-ink drawing, shows an archetypal Jewish East End kitchen interior from 1930. A neat, aproned woman is at the heart of this cosy composition suggesting domestic order and harmony. It includes many details, such as the fringed cloth covering the mantelpiece (typical of the era) and a picture or of a bearded, orthodox Jewish man, wearing a yarmulke (skullcap) on the wall behind her. This version was adapted by the artist into a Christmas card for his neighbours in the 1970s.
