Hyam Myer's 'Hooded Woman' is an example of a later work by the modernist painter and sculptor. The woman's head and upper body are covered with a black cloth, her hands clasped in front of her and her intent gaze directed at something outside our vision. The drawing is notable for Myer's masterful, almost sculpture-like rendering of the woman's nose and lips; the multiple creases on her clock, depicted with a darker shade of wash, create form and movement, resulting in a wonderfully expressive portrait, charged with intensity. The following work comes from the collection of Alice Schwab (Liesel Rosenthal), a Jewish artist who fled Germany in the 1930s and settled in London, amassing an extensive collection of prints by German and British artists from the 1920s-1930s and beyond. Schwab served as Chairwoman of the Ben Uri Arts Committee in the 1970s-1990s.
