Feibusch first showed a work entitled 'The Sacrifice of Isaac' at the Ben Uri's opening exhibition of work by Jewish artists at its Woburn House premises in May-June 1934, prompting The Jewish Chronicle's art critic to comment on its 'full-blooded [...] vehement, titanic energy[...], controlled within its aesthetic formula'. This gouache study (from a series of six) relates to the larger oil on canvas painting 'Isaac with Abraham Carrying Wood for the Altar Fire', one of a series of five commissioned by Rabbi Hugo Gryn for the Stern Hall of the West London synagogue in 1973. Although the subject matter and composition are the same, in this study, Isaac is shown as a young boy, emphasising his vulnerability, but in the larger painting he appears as a young man.
