Allin depicts an imagined scene, drawing on his childhood memories when Hessel Street market was at the heart of London's Jewish East End. It is early morning and as the newspaper boy makes his deliveries, the stall holders begin to set up their various fruit and veg or clothing stands. Around them the shops – most bearing Jewish names, such as Rappaport, Green, Skeil and Woolf – and offering goods including kosher meat and fish, begin to unwind their awnings, ready for the business of the day.
