Soukop's head of the charismatic Polish émigré dancer and choreographer, Pola Nirenska (who also sat to Jacob Epstein), was sculpted in pink cement at Dartington in 1937 and exhibited at the London Group in the same year. Also among the 60-strong ballet corps, was the French dancer Simone Michelle (née Moser 1916–1993), Soukop’s future wife, whom he wooed successfully despite neither speaking the others’ language. Another dance subject was the striking Trinidad-born Chinese dancer Dai Ailian (1916–2006), a former Marie Rambert student, who arrived at Dartington in spring 1939 to take up a Jooss-Leeder scholarship and sat twice to Soukop.
