“Bands of Pride” (2017), commissioned by the Migrations Museum for their show “No Turning Back: Seven Migration Moments that Changed Britain”, is a multi-panel collage and a response to the Expulsion of Jewish people from England in 1290.
Using family photographs supplied by the artist’s Jewish friends, this collage explores the racist policies enacted against Jews under Edward I (including the wearing of yellow) prior to their expulsion. Yellow is deliberately absent from the collage and instead the blue colour palette was chosen as a positive symbol of remigration to reflect the Blue City, Chefchaouen in Morocco, where Jewish settlers painted their houses in many shades of blue. The artist’s palette reflects this ‘to celebrate Jewish culture and contributions’.Provenance
