The Yiddish term 'schmattes' is slang for the garment or 'rag trade', and evokes the Jewish contribution to the industry, based in London's East End. With its hand-drawn bolts of fabric and rolled-up tape measure on a bed of horsehair canvas, Cowan's sculpture captures and references the many stages in the long history of garment-making.
