September 2022, Ben Uri was honoured to be invited to join the exclusive World Art Foundations association.
Our physical programme in 2023 is exciting and reflects our diverse collection and the areas of academic focus of our Research Unit for the study of the Jewish, refugee and immigrant contribution to British visual culture since 1900.
5 exhibitions at Ben Uri’s gallery in Boundary Road, one exhibition at the German Embassy and one very special opportunity to highlight some of our signature works in January 2023 as the selected Museum Partner at the prestigious London Art Fair held at the Design Centre, Islington, London N1, from the 18th to the 22nd of January.
Our first exhibition opening on the 11 January until the 17 February is titled ‘Joy’ which responds to Ben Uri’s involvement in the National Gallery’s exhibition “Fruits of the Spirit” - see https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/research/research-resources/exhibition-catalogues/fruits-of-the-spirit-art-from-the-heart.
We have invited our long-held colleague charity, The New Art Studio, to present artworks by recent refugees who have been supported by their good offices. New Art Studio is a wonderful charitable resource which offers a unique therapeutic art studio for asylum seekers and refugees in London and we are always happy to support and partner.
Our second exhibition opening on the 1 March until 2 June is titled ’Shaping the Future’ which reveals over 30 new arrivals to the Ben Uri Collection including fine interesting examples by Chagall, Kitaj, Mayer-Marton, Narielwalla, Nessler, Ribeiro, Sher, Solomon, Topolski, Ullman and Wolmark.
We are introducing a new exhibition concept for one month creating an in-depth focus on just one or two works. This year our focus is on Peter Howson’s monumental 'Holocaust Crowd Scene 11’ followed by, and subject linked, two full scale drawings of the Nuremberg War Crimes trial of 1946 by Dame Laura Knight. These exhibitions run consecutively from 14 June to 14 July for Howson and 26 July to 1 September for Laura Knight.
Our finale of the year is ’Sheer Verve’ celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Women’s International Art Club’ founded in Paris in 1898. This important loan exhibition includes works by the artist members including Sonia Delaunay, Ithell Colquhoun, Barbara Hepworth, Gwen John, Marlow Moss and Paula Rego.
