Nigerian Modernism at the Tate is more like a history lesson than an exhibition

Several artists stand out. Enwonwu is honoured with an entire gallery, dominated by his extraordinary 1960 commission for the Daily Mirror: seven imposing ebony figures, like elongated gargoyles or baleful angels, each holding a sharp-edged “newspaper” like a trophy, hymn book or shield.
