Village by the Sea
Menachem Lemberger was born into a Hasidic Jewish family in Cracow, Poland in 1938. Four years later his parents were murdered in Auschwitz and he and his grandmother sought refuge in the woods, eventually joining the partisans in Slovakia. After the war, Lemberger was eventually placed in a Youth Aliyah school in Israel, joined later by his grandmother in 1949, when they settled near Tel Aviv. Lemberger attended Takhkemoni elementary school and Rav Amiel Yeshiva. From the age of 15, he worked in diamond polishing. In 1962, he began to study art at the Avni Insitute in Tel Aviv, where he later taught as well creating his own art works including painting and sculpture in styles ranging from minimalist to expressionist.
