Harold Kopel was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. He exhibited frequently in group exhibitions including with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the New English Art Club, the Arcade Gallery in Temple Fortune, and Ben Uri, where he held a solo show in 1974 and also participated in the annual members' shows on occasion (including in 1969). Peter Stone, the art critic for the 'Jewish Chronicle' called him a 'gentle, quiet, soft painter with a good colour range'.
