Much of Naphtali Kornbluth’s subject matter is inspired by his own East End neighbourhood, often featuring the hidden canals and industrial riversides of east London. The following etching depicts Limehouse Cut, a canal which historically linked the lower reaches of the Lee Navigation to the River Thames, and currently connects Lee Navigation to the Limehouse Basin. Kornbluth’s intricately executed etching of Limehouse Cut in the 1930s, with its shipyards and barges, is part of an invaluable record of the historical London industry.
