Despite moving to Switzerland in 1953, Kokoschka was made a CBE in 1959 and given an honorary doctorate by the University of Oxford in 1963, also making return visits to London. Following an important retrospective of his work at the Tate Gallery in 1962, a commission from Ganymed Original Editions to produce a series of lithographs to accompany Shakespeare’s King Lear revived his work as a powerful graphic artist This late depiction of Tower Bridge and the river Thames is part of an impressive suite of late lithographs of London scenes carried out in the late 1960s.
