Alfred Lomnitz 1892-1953
1892, Eschwege, Germany–1953,
London, England
Immigrated to the UK in 1933
Lomnitz left for the UK in 1933 after Nazi antisemitic laws came into
force. Painted shortly after his arrival, this work stages a vivid interplay between the outline of a figure and a page from the Evening Standard, tying the body to a new reality in Britain. Despite building a new life in the UK, Lomnitz was interned in 1940 as an ‘enemy alien’ at Huyton Camp in Liverpool when Churchill’s policy of mass internment swept him up.
