My kindergarten was built in 1960. A local newspaper reported the opening of a new nursery for 125children of the Orgsteklo factory workers — among them was my father, whose family had just moved toDzerzhinsk. I later attended the same kindergarten, followed by my younger brother. After the factory went bankrupt in the late 1990s, the building was abandoned. As the city’s populationdeclined, it remained empty. Each time I came home, I visited the site, watching how it slowly decayed andbegan to resemble stills from wartime footage. Recently, the building was finally demolished.
