When I was a child, the peephole in our apartment door was too high for me to reach. If I wanted to lookthrough it, I had to fetch a stool first.Through that small glass lens, the world outside appeared as a curved panorama of the landing andstairwell — a fragile threshold between the private and the public. But the most unsettling thing was when,at that very moment, someone on the other side was looking in.
