David Bomberg
Barges, 1919
Oil on canvas
Tate
This painting was one of two studies of barges that Bomberg exhibited at the London Group in November 1919 and one of a series of canals and barges that he created between 1919-21. It is thought to represent the Regent's Canal (Bomberg was then living in Hampstead). Prior to the war he has painted an earlier series of barges at Rotherhithe and Wapping and a further series at Teddington in 1920.
