Susser specialised in portraiture, working in a detailed, precise and naturalistic style, as in this portrait of his brother, who is shown as a practising Orthodox Jew with his payot (side burns) and beard, and covered head (Susser himself was a member of the Wolverhampton Hebrew congregation and the local B'nai B'rith Lodge). The portrait was probably first shown at Ben Uri Gallery in 1946 in the exhibition 'Subject of Jewish Interest' as 'Study of a Young Jew', and then subsequently under the title 'The Artist's Brother'. Susser's other portraits included one of the German-Jewish silent era film producer David Oliver during internment in 1940, and local Wolverhampton figures.
