Co-curator Sarah MacDougall writes of 'the bold handling of Cohen's spectacular Sunset from Blackfriars', commenting: 'sky and river melt into one fiery whole, spreading out into the water until it too catches flame. Clearly, it is the sunset itself and not the view which is the intended focus of this painting; an insistence on mark-making and a textural surface, suggestive of the palette knife, also capture the intensity of the rays of the setting sun reflected out onto the water, radiating life and energy'.
