Head was executed in 1948 while Metzger was living in Antwerp and studying at the Kunstakademie under Gustav de Bruyne. It was exhibited alongside Head of a Man (c. 1952) and Head of E. Royalton-Kisch (1950) at the Temple Gallery in 1960, using the same framing device of simple wooden strips tacked to each side of the work.
