The Gustav Metzger Foundation
Having spent a year at the Antwerp Academy where he was taught by Belgian graphic artist and figurative painter, Gustave De Bruyne, and, subsequently, three months in France where he visited Grünewald’s Isenheim altar, Metzger returned to Britain in the autumn of 1949. He spent the winter at the Oxford School of Art (now Oxford Brookes University) during which time he executed this work.
