According to the Catalogue and Survey of Activities published by the Jewish Art and Literary Society Ben-Uri in 1930, this painting 'by the well-known deaf-mute painter of Jewish-Polish ghetto subjects, Maurice Minkowski, [...] at the time successfully exhibiting his works in Paris and London', was purchased in May 1929. The documentation of life, particularly Jewish rituals and traditions, in the Eastern European shtetls, was at the heart of Minkowski's practice. This watercolour depicts three women reading the Book of Lamentations on what is considered one of the saddest days in the Jewish religious calendar, Tisha B’av, the observance of which includes five prohibitions, most notably, a 25-hour fast. The candlelit scene offers an intimate glimpse into the female observance of this important, spiritually charged day, with most of it, in accordance with the Jewish law, taking place separately from the observance by Jewish men.
