German émigré Erich Wolfsfeld’s crayon drawing of two children carrying water is likely to date from his frequent travels throughout the Middle East, prior to the First World War, when he depicted both Jewish and Arab subjects. At his 1958 memorial exhibition it was noted that his paintings and etchings were ‘remarkable for strong, realistic draughtsmanship in which the illustrative element, allied with great technical force, is used to present character warmed and informed by a deep humanity’.
