Lottie Reizenstein’s draughtsmanship shines through in this colourful watercolour still life from 1945. The year of its creation coincides with the end of the Second World War, an event which would have been undoubtedly central for the artist, directly affected by the conflict as a German Jewish refugee living in London. In the April 1968 publication by the Association of Jewish Refugees in Great Britain, a reviewer of Reizenstein’s studio exhibition noted the following: ‘Her works affirm the victory of light, form, order and colour over darkness, destraction, anarchy and grey despair... A glowing and graceful flower still-life or a sun-drenched and jubilant landscape of hers are destined to give joy and hope to any room. Yet there is nothing cheap, sentimental or sloppy about her pictures. Her art is disciplined and her technique is of a high standard. As a good draughtsman, she emphasises shape and harmonious composition.’
