In this painting and the next entitled ‘The Lady with the Umbrella’ Rosen superimposed oil paint images and pen and ink portraiture onto pre-etched canvases. In doing so he created a completely fresh visual experience by multi-layering the etched background which gave a depth and perspective of great interest to the work.
